New Music From Beck

Well this came up super fast. I feel like I’m just now getting the hang of the site and it’s already time to write another post. There is an interesting thing happening as I am not an avid social poster, though I think I can understand why people do it a little better now.

But that’s not why I’m writing today.

I was driving over the bridge yesterday and I began to see spots.

Have you ever closed your eyes for a long time and started to see geometrical black and white shapes in static?

Yeah, that; but while I was driving not closing my eyes at all. I then was stricken with a headache that was the worst pain I felt in quite some time. A sharp pain sort of in my temple and behind my eye at the same time. And it popped out of my neck.

Now I don’t know if it was from panic or a part of the situation but suddenly I had shortness of breath. Then the final blow… tunnel vision.

I have never been surer of my death. But, I didn’t die.

I called my girlfriend and she stayed on the phone with me keeping my mind occupied while I looked for a spot to stop.

I am so grateful for her and our son, they immediately got in the car and started heading toward me.

The spell passed and I made it home safe.

The whole ordeal was weird because I am generally healthy.

Not a gym person or anything like that but I eat right and exercise.

So quite obviously I was a little sad about…

I went online to turn on some tunes (a thing I do) and the app was on the music section.

Lo and behold there was new music from Beck!

Yes I am a fan.

I went through the new songs (like half of them were covers) and was really impressed with two of the songs.

It got me to thinking about an old OutKast song where Andre 3000 talks about his favorite group wasn’t “Comin ’ wit it”.  Now o believe music is a big part of writing. As a writer I can’t image writing a whole book and never dabbling in songs or lyrics. But I started to think about how it lacks in a lot of writing. Like there is of course a brief or generic description of sounds, but what about the songs that you can hear as you read. You know like Scott Pilgrim!

Maybe it’s just me and my comic book background but sounds represented by words is an art form.

That and food, I feel like we are such a food driven culture but so many people in books just have a club sandwich or the like. It’s used more like a character trait than what it is in real life which is an experience.

Also, maybe I’m reading the wrong books.

Even the experience of bad music or food could be a great and relatable reading experience.

Because much like life you experience it and regardless of how good or bad it is you have a memory to share about ‘how great the staff was how bad the food was’ or ‘how the guitar almost made you cry when you heard it’ or ‘I almost died on the bridge but then Beck made a new album’.

Feeling like I was going to die made me think about the things in life that make life worth it. The things that I should say to people. But most of all it made me really enjoy those Beck songs.
